How much does it cost for a well?
A clean, adequate water supply is the most important investment for your home. Well costs vary depending on a variety of factors including location, depth, and customer’s choice of water system. On average, residential wells with complete water systems can range from a few thousand to upwards of twenty thousand.
How deep do you have to drill to hit water?
The depth of a well is dependent on many factors including location and desired yield for homeowner needs. Drilling continues until an adequate, clean water supply in located in the bedrock beneath the surface layers.
How do you know where to dig the well?
North Carolina law requires a well permit to ensure wells are properly located, constructed, and repaired, so that water quality and public health are protected. This permit designates which area of the property the well can be constructed. The chosen area will then need to be cleared and mostly level so that the drilling equipment can access the site.
Do I need a filtration system for my well water?
The mountains of Western North Carolina provide some of the cleanest groundwater in the country. Due to this fact, most wells do not require a filtration system. However, water quality differs by location and some wells may experience problems with minerals, such as iron, or sediment in the water. These systems may require additional filtration to improve water quality to meet customer needs.
How often should I get my water tested?
North Carolina law requires a well permit prior to the construction of a residential well. Water testing is included in the well permitting fee. Once the well is complete and operational the local health department will arrange to test the water.
Where can I get my well water tested?
For annual well water testing contact your local or state Health and Human Services Department. They will be able to refer you to a certified laboratory in your area.
